Where do I start?

I borrowed the title of my blog from Wind, Sand and Stars (originally in French, Terre des hommes) by Antoine de Sainte-Exupery. When I was a very young person and bored in school, I came across Sainte-Exupery's aviation related stories from his days as a flying mail courier in north Africa. His books became the Lonely Planet Guide of my time.

Fast forward to spring 2006, somewhere in the southern Urals in Central Russia. I found myself sitting in a cafe with an employee of the hotel where I was staying. As soon as we had sat down, he asked if I had read, Sainte-Exupery? In such a far away place, exactly halfway around the world (for me), someone would ask me about a favourite, little known author from the past. The employee's name happens to be, Alexander. (In Russia, I discovered, every other man has a variation of my name, all nicknamed Sasha). Strange coincidence.

Sainte-Exupery is better known for his classic, The Little Prince, a children's fairy tale, an allegorical travelogue, more popular with adults than with children. This blog does not aspire to have any of that. The posts are just records of events in and about travel from fluff to odd with photos of course. For those wanting to know more about where I've been and what I've been up to, this will give you some idea.

JAB

P.S. I discovered that my title for this blog isn't as original as I thought. I didn't think many people had read this book at all!
